Des Moines Fire Training and Logistics Facility Des Moines, Iowa

New energy-efficient 53,773 SF training and logistics facility.

Serving nearly 200,000 people in the Des Moines area, the Des Moines Fire Department knows how important training is as a part of being a well-prepared fire department. Now, they are able to train new recruits and current members to local and national standards as the fire department received a new 53,773 square foot training and logistics facility.

Included in their new facility are classrooms, apparatus training bays, multipurpose areas, maintenance space, a supply and distribution warehouse, and administrative offices. The building was designed for the future expansion of both the apparatus and maintenance bays.

The first fire station was built in 1933, and the fire department and its equipment outgrew the current location. For the past several years, the department has had to find empty parking lots and ask for space in nearby buildings in the Des Moines area in order to properly train their members.

The new facility was constructed from a pre-engineered metal frame with the exterior material surface being a combination of burnished block, brick veneer, metal panels, glass and aluminum storefront, and curtain wall systems. Inside energy efficient heating and cooling system was installed, including a geothermal system.

The building was awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
